It was in April, 25th 1341 that the ship Querina took sail from Crete bound for Antwerp in Flanders, bearing a shipment abounding in barrels of the nest Malvasia wine from Candia, amphorae of oil, baskets of raisins and other precious goods. Likewise, the ships owner Pietro Querini, a renewed and sensitive Venetian Nobleman, boarded the ship. They were to embark on a great lengthy voyage that was to be suffused with the unexpected, adversity, suffering, hope and adventure, so intense that those that would one day return would do so afflicted in body and in soul. The diaries of Pietro Querini has fascinated readers for more than half a millennium. The heart of this new book, dedicated to the shipwreck of the Querina, is in the images. Retracing this adventure through the use of art by the Master Franco Fortunato furthers us from the problems of translation and interpretation, from the investigations regarding the route taken, the distance, the consistency in time and date and brings us to a different level of reading, more intimate and universal.
