The history of the Italian merchant navy, from the unification of Italy to today, has been complex and conflicting, with important insights, serious errors of assessment, lucky moments and not a few tragedies. Thus was born the idea of ​​a four-volume work intended for a large audience to tell this little-known story in the world. The third volume of The history of the Italian Merchant Navy is monographic and entirely dedicated to the Second World War and follows it from its beginnings, in September 1939, to its epilogue in the spring of 1945. In this period of time, the Italian fleet is practically destroyed. With a variety of sources, from the documentation of the Historical Office of the Navy, to the Historical Archive of Confitarma, to individual essays and works on this topic, the volume reconstructs this story in a chronological key. Often, in fact, The history of the Italian merchant navy in the conflict has been told through episodes of individual ships, but beyond the tragic cases of ships and crews, there is a broader story: the political, military and diplomatic one.
