Dalle parole dell’autore: “Coltivar el mar e lassar star la tera… Questa frase di un doge conquecentesco è la migliore sintesi del rapporto di vera simbiosi che la città di Venezia ebbe con il mare, fino alle soglie dell’età industriale. Centinaia sono i tipi di navi, grandi o piccole, che nei secoli sono state costruite nell’Arsenale e nei cantieri cittadini, ma solo di poche, purtroppo, conosciamo precisamente le forme. Si è voluto proporre una selezione dei bastimenti tipicamente veneziani, tra quelli di cui ci è stata tramandata sufficiente documentazione per poter effettuare attendibili ricostruzioni. Anche se tutto è riferito alle fonti, non sono freddi disegni tecnici, ma illustrazioni realistiche che sperano di trasmettere la sensazione della quotidianità che queste navi vivevano ogni giorno.”

From the author’s words: “Cultivate the sea and let the earth be… This phrases, from a sixteenth century doge, is the perfect expression of Venice’s symbiotic relationship with the sea, one that endured up to the threshold of the industrial age. Hundreds of types fo ships, both large and small, were built in the Arsenal and the city shipyards over the centuries, but today, unfortunately, we know the precise forms of only a few. Here we present a selection of typically Venetian vessels, from those which have been sufficiently well documented for us to carry out reliable reconstructions. Although nothing has been invented, these are not technical drawings, but realistic illustrations that hope to convey the feeling of the life these ships lived every day.
