While the first volume took us from the unification of Italy to the eve of the First World War, this book recounts an era that was both dramatic and decisive. A period marked by a conflict, in which shipping played an essential role and ended up paying an exorbitant price in terms of human lives and vessels, and a post-war period, in which economic crises and political ambitions both dealed a heavy blow to the shipowning world.
