Through powerful portraits and incredible surf scenes, Brown W. Cannon III’s book NORTH chronicles the lives of surf people – and the community around them – along the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. For the past 6 years Brown has photographed portraits against a 3×9 meter seamless gray background. You are able to study every detail of equipment, their faces and feel their power.

The large format (31.8 x 45.7 cm) of this book transports the observer into the inner circle of the North Shore, making the strength of the waves and the people almost physically perceptible.

In addition to Cannon’s decades-long passion for surfing and photography, NORTH is inspired by his family roots, which have made Hawai’i home since the 1920’s.
